Why your Betfair bot's bets go unmatched, and how to stop it
A bet on the Exchange is an offer, not an order. Here's why a bot's offers get left on the table, what happens to them at the off, and the settings that fix it.

Betfair only turns your offer into a bet when somebody takes the other side at your price. A bot doesn't change that. It just makes the offer faster and more often, so if the offer is wrong, it's wrong faster and more often. Most unmatched bets come down to five causes, and every one of them is a setting.
First: unmatched, or never placed?
These get lumped together and they're different problems. A bet that was never placed was stopped by a rule before it reached Betfair: the price was outside your minimum or maximum odds, a stop-loss or profit target had already been hit for the day, the selection never loaded, or the market wasn't there (abandoned meeting, non-runner, market not yet open when the bot looked). A bet that was placed and unmatched reached Betfair, went into the queue, and nobody took it.
Look at what the bot recorded for that race before you change anything. If the bet never went on, the answer is in your limits. If it went on and sat there, carry on reading.
Reason 1: the price moved
You asked for 4.0. The market is now 3.9. Your back bet is sitting above the market where nobody wants it, and it'll stay there until the price comes back to you or the market suspends. Lays are the mirror image: a lay at 3.8 in a 4.0 market is an offer nobody needs.
The earlier the bet goes on, the more time the price has to move. Horse racing markets don't form properly until the last ten minutes or so, and most of the money arrives in the last two or three. A bet placed at 11am into a market with a few hundred pounds in it is an opinion, not a bet.
Reason 2: not enough money at your price
There was £12 available to back at 8.0. You asked for £50. You got £12 matched and £38 unmatched, and the £38 is now first in the queue at 8.0 waiting for more layers to turn up. This is the normal state of affairs for outsiders, for greyhounds, and for anything at a small midweek meeting. It also catches people who scale a stake up after a good month without looking at whether the market can take it.
Reason 3: what happens at the off
When the race starts the market suspends and Betfair has to do something with every unmatched bet. There are three options, and your bot is using one of them whether you chose it or not.
- Lapse. The unmatched part is cancelled. This is the default. You just don't have the bet.
- Keep. The bet is carried into the in-play market at the same price. This is how people get hurt. A lay at 6.0 that's kept in-play gets matched the moment the horse hits the front and the price collapses, which is precisely when you don't want to be laying it at 6.0.
- Take SP. The unmatched part is converted to a Betfair SP bet at the off. For a back bet you want on, this is nearly always the right choice. You get the starting price rather than nothing.
Reason 4: your odds limits are tighter than the market
Strictly this is a never-placed problem, but it's the most common complaint we see. A minimum of 3.0 and a maximum of 6.0 on a system whose record has a chunk of winners at 7.0 and 8.0 doesn't make the system safer. It removes the winners. Set the limits to the range the record was actually built on, then leave them alone.
Reason 5: cutting the timing too fine
Placing a bet seconds before the off gets you the deepest market of the day. Placing it seconds after gets you a suspended market and no bet. The time on the racecard is a scheduled time, and races go off late far more often than early, so a bot that places at a fixed number of seconds before the scheduled off is usually fine. Just don't set it to two seconds and then wonder.
What to change
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Bet sat unmatched, then disappeared at the off | Price moved, bet lapsed | Place later, or switch the system to win bets at Betfair SP |
| Part of the stake matched, the rest didn't | Not enough money at the price | Smaller stake, place later, or SP |
| Bet matched in-play at a price you'd never have taken | Unmatched bet was kept in-play | Don't keep pre-off bets in-play unless the system is built for it |
| No bet at all on a selection that was in the list | Odds outside your limits, or a stop already hit | Check the limits against the record's price range |
| Bets going on but at worse prices than the record | Placed too early, or the record was at a price a bot can't get | Place closer to the off; read how to read a tipster's results |
If a system's record was kept at BSP, the simplest fix for all of this is to bet at BSP. Every bet goes on, every bet matches, and the price you get is the price in the record. There's a full explanation in Betfair SP explained.
How xCloudBot is set up for this
Every system in xCloudBot has its own bet timing, down to the second before the off, so you can place late without sitting at a screen. Win bets can go on at Betfair SP, which removes the queue altogether. Minimum and maximum odds, and stop at a profit or loss, are per system too. Selections from tipsters you copy load soon after 11:00 UK time, so there's a whole afternoon between the selection arriving and the bet going on, and the bot uses the timing you set rather than firing the moment the selection lands. If you want to see what a setting change would have done, simulation mode runs the system on paper with the same rules.
Questions people ask
Does an unmatched bet cost me anything?
No. If it lapses at the off it's cancelled and nothing is staked. The cost is the bet you didn't have, which matters a lot if it would have won.
Should I keep unmatched bets in-play?
Almost never for a pre-off system. In-play prices move in seconds, and a kept lay gets matched exactly when the horse is winning. Lapse it, or take SP.
Why was my bet only partly matched?
There wasn't enough money at your price to cover the whole stake. The matched part stands, the rest waits in the queue until more money arrives or the market suspends.
Is a Betfair SP bet always matched?
Yes, for the full amount, unless you set a price limit that the SP doesn't meet, or the market is voided.
Why did the bot bet at a worse price than the tipster's record?
Usually because the record was kept at a price that existed in the morning and the bet went on in the afternoon. A record kept at BSP doesn't have this problem, because the bot can get BSP.
